1849. Adrift in the Pacific Ocean. Starving. Dehydrated.

Desperate…

Trapped on a whale boat set adrift in 1849, two friends win a battle for survival and start an epic, twenty-seven-year journey that begins on the sun seared Pacific Ocean and ends on the violent prairies of the American frontier.

Nathan Rodgers and Thomas Talbot are among the few survivors of thirty-five days on an open boat.

Horrible things took place on that tiny boat.

Things that shaped the destinies of both men irrevocably.

Nathan returns to his wife and two sons in New Bedford, tries to hide from his conscience and eventually must flee west with his family.

Thomas heads west to seek his fortune and redeem himself.

Neither man ever sees the other again, but Thomas hugely affects the lives of Nathan’s wife, Jenny, and sons, Rob and Will.

The Rodgers’ neighbor, Samantha, goes from being a withdrawn child, living in a sod hut with abusive parents, to a true heroine while undertaking a great journey with Rob and Will that ends in the fulfillment of an unlikely love.

A brutal Kiowa warrior chief, Satanta, becomes intermingled with the struggles of Thomas, Samantha, the Rodgers family and actual historical events and ends with the destruction of a way of life.

Set during the time of the California gold rush and the battle between the Plains Indians and the US Army, Cast from the Sea is a beautifully written epic tale of the costs of survival in a harsh land.

Praise for Cast from the Sea

Wow, what a great read. The author does a wonderful job of building the story line into a fantastic saga of human endurance. His characters are among the best developed I have come across; they literally become "real" as each page is turned. I felt like I traveled each step if the way along with each character as they journeyed the American West. From the ocean to the mountains, this story brought both to life. Sam, Will, Rob, I wish you all safe travels.

Cast From The Sea edition by Gerald Baum Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this book from page one until the end. The story is wrapped in historic events in the settling of the western United States and gives the reader great insight into this era. The author’s descriptions of travel in the American West prior to rail travel provides an interesting insight to this time in history. I think this novel would make a great movie!
I received this ARC from netgalley.com in exchange for a review.

1849, Nathan Rodgers and Thomas Talbot are among the 10 survivors of thirty-five days on an open boat, which was separated from their whaling ship. They were forced to cannibalize their surviving shipmates. When rescued, they returned to their homes in Massachusetts but immediately moved west towards the gold rush to escape memories of the harrowing ordeal on Sea. They never meet again but their lives are forever entwined.

Honestly, I struggled through this book. The book was written in segments starting with a whaling adventure and then a land/Indian adventure. Bleh. It felt so broken and choppy.

But, the writing is such that I could imagine myself suffering through the ordeals with the men.

Set om 1849, Cast from The Sea takes readers on a harrowing journey with a handful of whalers trapped at sea for thirty-five days. Without provisions the whalers start dying and the others resort to cannibalism to survive.
After being rescued two of the whalers Nathan and Thomas part ways and lose contact with each other as suspicion arises on exactly what happened at sea. Nathan returns to his family a changed man and turns to farming as a way of life. Thomas heads west to look for work and find himself. Each man harbors dark secrets that they cannot share with anyone as they try to forget and make a new life for themselves.
Nathan’s two sons Rob and Will set out for California to explore opportunities, when they become involved with the war between the Kiowa Indians and the Army. Neither having much experience being away from home find themselves caught up in something they don’t know how to get out of.
Santana, a Kiowa warrior is intent on killing all white people he comes across no matter what the cost and ignores the fact that the Indian tribes are trying to work out a peace treaty with the Army.
Baum captures readers’ attention from the first page to the last. His writing is so descriptive one feels they are right in the action. The story is well developed and you can see he has done his research. The transition between the story of the whalers to the new life they try to start is smooth, and one never loses insight on what the characters are thinking or doing.
Cast from The Sea is about the choices destiny presents, and how those choices were answered.
5 plus stars!

This is an incredible story. It is very well written and the cover is gorgeous. There is not one wasted word or phrase. The small typos don’t even matter.

We start out at sea where Thomas, Nathan and several other men are left stranded in a small whale boat by the first mate of the Janet, the ship on which they were stationed. Left stranded in the middle of the ocean for thirty-five days, they thirsted and starved.

They strike out West on different routes, Thomas alone and Nathan with his wife Jenny and their two sons, Rob and Will. Nathan and his family homestead in Sunset, Kansas, next door to a family whose daughter is named Sam, for Samantha.

At the same time, a young Kiowa brave named Satanta calls the West his home. Satanta is brave and daring, but very humble at the same time. His favorite pastime is raiding and killing settlers. Obviously, this is a dangerous mix for the white folk both settling and traversing the West.

This book tells of all the glory of the Western countryside of Kansas, Colorado and other environs, and the attendant hardships of traveling therein in both summer and winter. It speaks to the courage of the average man and woman trying to make their way in the harsh country. It is a triumph of the human spirit in the face of much adversity.

Many, many thanks to Netgalley and Endeavour Press for granting my wish to read this most remarkable, wonderful and exciting book!
Enjoyed this book which follows several characters over the span of about 30 years. It begins with a whaling adventure and ends with several characters heading out to California. Most enjoyable and based on history.
I took this book on vacation to Aruba and could not put it down. The story line flowed and the characters were believable. I was intriged by the history and got a good sense of what people back then went thru to survive. Enjoyable read. Hats off to a new writer.
This book delivers in many ways for a great read. Fans of 1850's westerns, sailors stranded on whaling boats, family saga dealing with love and survival, this historical fiction is for you. An easy read that keeps you wanting more to follow the main characters of Thomas and Nathan.
Fans of Jim Fergus with A Thousand White Women and The Vengence of Mothers willl appreciate this book.
The author sets the scene and builds the characters as they come alive for the reader. it is hard to determine what is fiction and what actually happened.
A great read set in an exciting time in our history. Can't wait for more from Gerald Baum.
